Planning a School-Wide Scroll-a-Thon With Steven & William!

January 19, 2010

Good morning, everyone!

Today is a sad day for the 4Fives. For the past like two weeks or so, Steven and William (Bee’s brothers!) have been at PS 58 everyday to do a Scroll-a-Thon with the whole school.  It has been mad fun!  The 4Fives got to help them with everything, and plus Bee made us video tape everything so that we could document it.

But before Steven and William came to do the project, we got to go to their studio and do the whole thing with them!  It was really fun. We are a really lucky class because we always get to go to their studio and other artist studios too.

Keep checking back because we are going to post videos and pictures of the school Scroll-a-Thon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 4Fives Learn Photoshop!

January 15, 2010

Hello to all of my friends reading my blog post. Today I am going to tell you all about how the 4Fives are learning how to use Photoshop!!!

Photoshop is a program that you use to edit stuff like pictures and drawings.

There are 3 Photoshop steps that you need to know.

First, you choose the magic wand and click on the area that you want to color.

Then there is eye dropper, after you choose this, you click on the color that you want to use.

Lastly, there is the paint bucket, and you choose this and then click on the area that you want to fill with the color.

You could use these tools to help you with your pictures. And when you are doing photo shop you could do it with friends or your family and when you are finished, you could put it on your blog or what ever you what.

I am glad that we are learning to use Photoshop!

Have a good morning!

Haiti Printmaking Project

January 15, 2010

Good morning everyone.

Today I have to write a really sad blog post.

Bee and Megan have been teaching us all about the tragedy that has happened this week in Haiti. It is the saddest thing that has ever happened. In Haiti, the people are poor.  There was an earthquake over there and I feel bad for them. I had never seen an earthquake but on the video that Bee showed us we saw so many buildings that were destroyed. I don’t understand how these people will ever be able to have money to build new houses. The whole thing just makes me want to cry.

A lot of people died in Haiti. People were crying that there friends and family had died. So many people were trapped in the buildings and I think that they still are.

Even though everything is very very very sad, we are going to try to do something positive to help. Bee asked us “what do you think that we could do to help?” and Nick said “I think that we should do like sell bags and t-shirts.” and I said “yay! we should make a design and then we can screenprint them on stuff and sell them and send the money to Haiti.” And Bee said “Yay! Good idea!”

So yesterday here is the design that we came up with to put on the bags and shirts:

The 4Fives Haiti Logo!

Bee and Megan are going to do printmaking with us next Tuesday so that we can start our fundraising project right away.

Oh, and also three teachers at our school all have a lot of family in Port-au-Prince. Ms. Handel, Ms. V., and Ms. Blackwell are those teachers. We are really hoping that their family members are okay. But there is really no good way to get in touch with them to find out if they are okay.

Well, that’s all. But if you think that you want to help the people in Haiti, and if you don’t know how you could help, then you should send us a comment and you could buy a bag or a shirt from us. That will definitely help them.

The 4Fiver Kids Visit Chris Asley… PART 2!!!

January 13, 2010

Hello everyone! I am going to talk about our after school visit to Chris Astley’s studio.  We went there for a 2nd time, and it was really fun! We were lucky because Jackie Lam went with us.

When we got there, Chris said to take out your finger casts from the cups. It was really hard to take it out, so I asked Jackie help and he got my fingers out. I said “thank you.”

Chris said “when you are done, paint your castings however you want to.”  So I painted mine red and blue. He said to leave them on the paper to dry.

Then Edie said “do you want to play out in the hallway?” And we said “yes. “ Edie was it at tag, and she was fast but not fast enough for me.

We also got a bunch of bubble wrap and stomped on it like crazy.  When we played with bubble warp it was really fun and the funny part was when Bee and Jackie was doing it with us.

After we played for awhile, Chris said “let us see your finger casts.”  We said “ok.”

They looked amazing !!!  We loved them!!!

I hope enjoy my post.

P.S. Chris ROCKS!

Taliya Upcycles!

January 12, 2010

Hello everyone!

My name is Taliya.  I am going to tell you in my post about an upcycling project that I did!

One day, I walked in the classroom, and Bee said “Hey Taliya! Do you want to do an upcycling project?”

I said “Yes, I would.”

Bee told me that we were going to upcycle these paper shapes into decorations for our windows.

I said “Where did you get these paper snowflakes from?”

She said “Me and my friend went to this show and while we were sitting in the audience all of these paper snowflakes fell down from the ceiling.  And we just grabbed them so that I could bring them to school to make a new project with.”

Then Bee said “I knew I should bring them in so my friend Taliya can upcycle these snowflakes.”

And then after that Bee showed me how to make the decorations with the snowflakes.  At first I though it would be very hard to make these decorations, but it was really easy.

And now I am going to tell you how you do it.

First, you get a string and needle and then you get as many paper snowflakes as you want. Then you go in the very center of the snowflake and poke it in the middle, with the needle.  Then after you do that push the snowflake down on the string very slow so it can be very neat. Oh yeah, and you have to cut a long string so all of the flowers can fit on that one big string. And then when you are done you can just add more to it so it can look very nice.

When you are doing that you do not have to push all of the flowers all together, you can space them all out.

And then when I was doing it and I felt very happy.

And then when you do that you can bring it home or you can leave it in your classroom.

The 4Fiver Kids Visit Chris Astley!

January 11, 2010

When we went to Chris Astley studio we saw all of the art that was made from his bare hands.

We saw Chris Astley working and we saw our editor helping him (guess what? Edie is his daughter!) So then we went in the studio and said “hi, hello nice to meet you!” Then we put are jackets on his big chair.

Chris talked to us about a project that were going to do together.   We were going to cast our fingers in whatever shape we wanted.

But to make the cast, first we had to put our fingers in the slimy stuff in the cup and wait there just for 10 minutes, but I said “that it feels too slimy and feels too nasty!” When we took out our fingers we saw a hole where our fingers were at.  Then we poured this material in the hole that needed time to dry and get hard.

Chris said that we would come back to paint them.  I was so happy that next time we come we get to paint our casting of our fingers that we made.

It was great meeting Chris and it was fun meeting Edie and I thought that our editor was 19 years old but she is 12 years old. Chris was happy to see us and I was happy to see him too.  He makes some cool stuff like the big square that is hanging on the side of the wall.  He is the master of art and he is great and cool. Chris is the best and is like a king.

At the end we were thirsty. So we got a drink of water. John asked Chris if he had soda and Bee and Ms. Kimball kept laughing about that but I don’t really know why.

Then we said “goodbye” and “see you next time when we come back and have more fun. “ We walked to the train and went back to the school so our moms could pick us up.

I had so much fun in Chris’s studio after school.

Designing the Season 2 Logo!

January 7, 2010

Good Morning People,

Today I am going to tell you all about our logo that we’ve work on.

So one day in Art class we went in and we all sat in a circle and we were looking through different company logos so that we could understand why people choose different logos to represent themselves. Then we stop to look at a logo that was a panda and Ms. Kimball told us that a panda represents the logo for the World Wildlife Fund.

Before we made the designs Ms. Kimball listed down the projects we been working on in the classroom and we said” the garden project, the La Oroya project, and the Water Project.”

After that Ms. Kimball signed us up with partners and so we had to work together as a group. After that, we went to our seats and she told us to make designs to see what’s best for our logo. Then she and Bee came around to check everybody’s designs.  After that Ms. Kimball called one person to share their designs in front of the whole class.  We put our designs together and came up with our logo.

The 4Fives Work on an Upcycling Project With S&W

January 6, 2010

Hello Everyone I am going to tell you about our first trip to visit Steven and William!!!

When we went to Steven and William’s studio we worked on an upcycling project.  What we did is we watched Steven was cutting a big piece of trimming leftover from a place called the Invisible Dog. William said that we are working with buckles that were going to be thrown away, but that he rescued them to work on a project. And he said that these buckles are very dirty. They told us that our job was to string the buckles onto the trimmings.  We were going to add these to a chandelier they were making for their studio.

We started doing it and everyone had a lot of buckles and we worked as fast as we could. Bee said we were having a competition and we all said “WHAT” then we went back to work and Ray was saying “This is hard”.  But we had to finish these strips because if we didn’t finish it, then Steven and William were not going to hang it up.

We took a break for lunch and we ate lunch as quick as possible because we had to finish our competition.

We are really lucky that we did finish it. It was cool.
